INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup salted butter (not margarine)
1/2 cup corn syrup (like this)
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk (like this)
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
optional: coarse salt
(see my tips below)

See my Darlene’s Concoctions videos!

DIRECTIONS:

1:  Melt butter completely in a medium microwave-safe bowl, about 20-30 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds to check it.

2:  Add corn syrup, sweetened condensed milk and brown sugar and mix until combined. Microwave uncovered for 5 to 7 minutes.

3:  Place a bit of the caramel into a bowl of ice water. If a small bead forms, the caramel is ready. If a bead doesn’t form, microwave for 30 more seconds and test again. Continue microwaving an additional 15 seconds and testing again until a small bead forms.

4:  Grease the bottom and sides of an 8×8-inch dish with butter. Pour caramel in the pan (sprinkle top with coarse salt if desired)

5:  Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes to set.  Cut into any size pieces of your choice and wrap in parchment or wax paper.

Darlene’s Tips: Put these wrapped caramels in a decorative tin to make an awesome holiday gift! Or bag some in decorative bags to hand out to your holiday guests. You can usually pick up decorative bags at most dollar stores. If not, pick up plain clear bags in the candy making section at walmart and tie with holiday ribbon and a gift tag. Want to try something extra special? Dip the caramels in melted chocolate morsels!  I bet that would work!
