How I do laundry for 3 years on less than $5 for detergent

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

I am so tickled with this laundry detergent deal that I got!  It all worked exactly as planned.  My Coupon Hunter had the coupons on her site, I ordered them, they came in time for the sale, and my CVS had stock!  I just love it when stuff like that happens!

I paid $4.62 for all the detergent you see and that includes tax.  They were on sale last week at CVS for $1.49 each and I had (5) coupons for $1/2 Xtra.  I also had some ExtraBucks that I used to pay it down. I used several CVS cards (mine, my mothers, my husbands) and on two of those cards I got $1 EB in return for using my Green Bag Tag, so I have $2 left to spend!

I s-t-r-e-t-c-h my laundry detergent to make it last longer by using my borax booster method (see that laundry tip HERE). That means those 10 jugs you see will really be like 40 jugs.  We don’t do much laundry, so this is enough detergent for the next 3 years.  And since I still have 4 or 5 jugs in my stockpile, I’m set for a long time!

I hope by showing you some of the deals I get, I can help turn newbies on to couponing. I’ve been couponing for just over a year now and the amount of money I save is shocking.  Shocking!  I was one of those skeptics that swore it could not be done, then with the help of one blogger in particular… I did it!  I know I have not thanked her in a long time, but I owe is all to Chrystie Corns over at I Love to Gossip. Thank you CC!

Don’t forget to pick up your Milky Way Bars at CVS this week

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

This week you can get an even money deal at CVS if you have the coupons that I posted a little while ago.

What I love about deals like this is it gives us a chance to roll over ExtraBucks. For instance, I had a $.75 EB that was expiring yesterday… I had to buy something!!! I walked in, bought 2 Milky Way bars, gave them the printable coupon and the $.75 EB, paid just the tax, and walked out with 2 candy bars and a shiny new $.75 EB! I love it when that happens!

Here’s the deal at CVS through 6/2:

Buy (2) Milky Way bars on sale for $.75 each
Use (1) $.75/2 Milky Way bars printable coupon
Pay $.75 at the register (pay it down with EB if you can, like I did)
Get $.75 EB in return (limit 1)… that’s even money!

Don’t forget to pick up and scan your CVS Green Bag Tag every time you shop!  You will earn $.25 (once per day) so every 4 times you scan your card you earn $1.00! Totally worth it!

My itty bitty shopping trips to CVS and OSJL – Spent $1.78

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

Geez… after spending just $.36 at Shaw’s tonight, these little trips to CVS and Ocean State Job Lot almost make me think I spent too much money!

I don’t know if the coupons for the FREE body wash are still available, but I discovered that even though the body wash is $2.27, I got the full $3 off so it gave me an overage on the candy bars.

First let’s start with OSJL, ’cause this one is easy:

I bought (2) packages Chinet napkins at $1.00 each
I used (2) $1/1 Chinet (NLA)
Final price was FREE, just paid $.10 tax

As for CVS, I used 4 cards and did 4 identical transactions:

I bought (1) body wash at $2.27
I bought (2) Dove at $.75 each
I used (1) FREE body wash coupon (got full $3 off)
I used (1) $.50/2 Dove Chocolate Singles Bars printable coupon
I paid $.42 including tax
I also got $.75 ExtraBucks for future purchase

I did this 4 times on 4 cards so my total OOP at CVS was $1.68, but I got a total of $3 back in ExtraBucks plus $1 back on one card for my Green Bag Tag.

My grand OOP total at both stores was $1.78 and I’ve got $4 to spend at CVS. So, I guess that’s not too shabby!

** CHEAP ** Xtra Laundry Detergent only $1.49 at CVS – NO Coupon needed – See how you can double it!

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

CVS has their little jugs of Xtra laundry detergent, 28 loads, on sale this week for $1.49, no coupon needed!  They have this sale every now and then and when they do, I use up any ExtraBucks I have on hand and stock up!

Frugal Tip – Double Your Detergent

You can double your Xtra detergent to get more for your money by cutting the detergent with water and adding Borax or Arm & Hammer Washing Soda to the mix (find those in the detergent aisle, both are cheap at Walmart, around $3-ish per box).

  • Pour half the jug of detergent into another equal size jug
  • Add 1/2 cup of Borax or Washing Soda to each jug
  • Add a couple squirts of any dish soap to each jug
  • Fill each jug with water then turn a few times to mix

That’s all there is to it!  You just turned one jug of detergent into two and got double for your money! You will be tempted to use more detergent because it’s watered down, but don’t. Just use your normal amount. The Borax or Washing Soda adds the cleaning boost you need and the dish soap gives you the suds you desire :O)

If you find that your Borax or Washing Soda clumps, next time you can dilute it first in a cup of hot water then add to the jug. I always turn the jug to mix each time before I use it. You can also toss a little scrap of bar soap in the jug if you like. Great way to use up those scraps of soap!

My $12 Challenge – It comes to a close!

These shopping trips are part of my $12 Challenge. Click here to see entire list of everything I purchased!

It’s over!  I decided I’d end the challenge when I reached $1,000 and I went well past that mark since my last update… and still have money left to spend!  I think with careful planning I could have kept this going on for a long, long time.  This challenge was super fun but also lots of work.  The shopping was tough and typing in all the transactions was even tougher! I’m glad it’s over :O)

How I rolled over my CVS ExtraBucks

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

I have been looking for a good way to roll over my $4 and $1 ExtraBucks that I’ve been hanging on to for my $12 Challenge.  I thought I’d have to just cave in and buy candy or something that would not give me any EBs in return.  But then, things all fell into place!

First, back on March 7th, I used my $1 EB to buy jelly beans for $.99. I got $.99 EB in return and I found a penny on the ground, so I really got my entire $1 back… tee hee!

Today I had to use my $4 EB because it was expiring.  So, I had the $4 and the $.99 to use and this is what I did…

Bought (1) PediaCare, reg $7.49, on sale for $5.99
Used (1) $1/1 PediaCare coupon from 10/9 SS Insert
Used $4 EB
Used $.99 EB
Total was ZERO
I paid $.30 tax
I got back $5 ExtraBucks!
I also got back $1 EB for scanning my Green Bag Tag

Then I turned around and did this…

Bought (2) 6-packs of Irish Spring bar soap, reg $5.79 each, sale $3.50 each
Used (1) $1/2 Irish Spring from 3/11 SS insert
Used $5 EB from previous purchase
Used $1 EB from previous purchase
Total was ZERO
I paid $.30 tax
I got back $4 ExtraBucks!

I ended up spending just $.60 out of pocket for tax and I got 12 bars of soap and a bottle of PediaCare to have on hand for when my granddaughter visits.  And I still have $4 left to use!  Pretty cool, eh?

EVEN MONEY on Gold Emblem Jelly Beans at CVS – No Coupon Needed

I use affiliate links in some of my posts. I may earn a commission if you use my links. Full disclosure.

Right now, through Saturday, you can pick up a bag of Gold Emblem jelly beans at CVS for $.99 and get $.99 ExtraBucks to use on your next purchase! You do not need a coupon!

So, if you were to turn around and use the $.99 to pick up another bag of jelly beans, you would get the second bag free, but you would not get another $.99 ExtraBucks because there is just one ExtraBucks per card. You would, however, end up with 2 bags of jelly beans for only $.99 total!

ROLLOVER: If you have a $1 Extrabucks, use it to get your first bag for FREE! Even though the total is only $.99, they can adjust it. You only lose a penny. Worth it.

CVS in Sanford has plenty of these jelly beans, so stop by and get a bag! They have spice, black and speckled! I had $1 EBs on my card and also $1 EBs on my mother’s card so I was able to score 2 free bags! I got speckled and spiced!
