$2/1 McCormick Coupon and the difference between Spices and Herbs and Seasoning

I would love, love, love to tell you to run out and score the money maker that’s going around with McCormick seasoning packets, but being the gourmet cook that I am (insert big lol there), I can’t in good conscience promote using a coupon for spices and herbs on seasoning mixes.

Last time everyone was picking up free McCormick seasonings using a spice coupon, I got emails pointing out that I was missing a fantastic deal.  I wasn’t missing it, I just never posted it because to me is was not the correct way to use the coupon.

This time around, I’m going to come right out and explain why I will not promote using the McCormick spice and herb coupon on seasoning.  It’s because a seasoning is a blend of spices and herbs, but usually contains other ingredients that are not spices or herbs, like salt or sugar. Both salt and sugar can be used to season or flavor foods, but they are not spices.  Just because something adds flavor, that doesn’t make it a spice.

Here’s the best way to decide how to use the McCormick Gourmet Spice or Herb coupon.

Go to their website and look at what they have under Spices

and also look at what they have under Herbs

I feel that’s what McCormick expects us to use the coupons on since the coupon specifically states spice or herb.  If they wanted us to use it on seasoning mixes, they would say so right there on the coupon… don’t you think?

With that said, the seasoning packets do contain spices and or herbs, but also contain various other seasonings and flavorings (tomatoes, onion, cheese, oil, cornstarch, citric acid, etc.). So, if you feel justified in using the coupon on the packets since they do have spices and herbs inside, it’s none of my business.  I’m not the coupon police!

No matter what, this is an awesome coupon and you should print it!  I printed mine, but I’ll wait for a sale on spices and herbs. I’m up to my ears in seasonings since I keep all the packets from Hamburger Helper to season my food… lol
