A Different Way to Arrange Your Stockpile

I want to share with you a different way to arrange your stockpile.  I did this about a year ago and I loved it so much.  The only reason I’m not still doing it is because sometimes I get lazy (who, me?) and by the time I finish bringing my bags downstairs or upstairs (I’m in transition… always), I just want to put the bags down and be done with it.  If I get the stuff out of the bags and on a shelf, I consider that quite the accomplishment.  However, I want to get back to my old system of packing boxes by the month.

What you do is get boxes or bins or even just bags and sort your food by month.  If you have 12 cake mixes and you want to bake 2 cakes per month, put 2 in the November stash, 2 in the December stash, and so on.  Go ahead and do this with as many of you stockpile items as you want. You can go out 3 months, 6 months, a year… it’s up to you.

You will find that by sorting your stockpile this way, you will actually use up your food!  Sometimes we couponers can end up with 12 cake mixes on a shelf… forever.  If you put them in your monthly stash, then you will be sure to use them!

If you have only a few of a certain item, like you love Nutella and could eat 4 jars a month but only have 4 jars total, go ahead and spread them out to 1 jar per month. Make them last! And you might find that it’s enough. Try not to borrow from the upcoming month’s stash.

The other good thing about this system is that it’s easy to rotate your stockpile. When first sorting for this system, check the dates and put the oldest stuff in the boxes for the closest months.  When you deplete your stash for one month, you move on to the next, then the next, then the next. The food always get rotated!

And you can actually save room with this system because you can stack boxes or bins and not worry about having to get to them until that month is here!

I had a lot of fun with this system. I was always anxious for the new month to start because it was like I had a whole new care package to go through.   Give it a try for a few months and see what you think!
