This video may interest some of you, but others might not care at all. And I had a tough time explaining the few details that I know. All I know is because I am a blogger, and because I place ads on my site from companies I’m affiliated with, I got to learn a little bit of the behind the scenes as to how all this stuff with ads work.
One thing I cover in this video is how you can (sort of) control how various sites use your shopping or surfing habits to feed more ads to you that they think you will like. Are they allowed to do this? Yes, they are. They are because every website or blog who uses ads has a privacy policy posted letting readers know that they are “being watched” by the advertisers or affiliates. Are readers expected to know that they should be reading the privacy policy of every site? I doubt it! They just expect you to ignore the policy and through ignorance, you are giving them permission to use cookies to track your every move.
But don’t let all this scare you. Think of it this way. You walk into a store and you look at a sweater. Then you take a few steps and a sales person comes up to you and says, “oh, we have more sweaters here, come look at them!” That’s all that the ads are doing. They are bringing you more of what they think you want to see. And they are assuming that if you walk into their store, you understand that they will want to show you more of what you just looked at.
With all that said, there are ways to opt out of sites following you around. I can’t explain it all, but I show you how to see my privacy policy and in mine, there are links you can use to get more help with opting out. If you opt out, that does not hurt my income, so feel free to opt out. You will still see ads, but supposedly they won’t track you with cookies.
