My father could not walk past a coin on the ground without stopping to pick it up. He would go out of his way… way out of his way… to check if that shiny thing he spotted might be a dime or a nickel or even a penny.
After he died, I started picking up coins because I know my father is sending them to me. My son also picks up coins in honor of his pepere. And when I’m out with my granddaughter and we find a coin on the ground, I tell her it’s from her grand pepere.
Sometimes I test my father to see if he’s listening. Tonight when I walked through the store parking lot, I spotted a penny. I picked it up and jokingly told my dad I wanted to pay for my groceries with that penny. I usually keep all the coins I find in a jar, but I was willing to part with that one, if that’s what my father intended.
As I shopped, I added up my purchase like I always do:
(4) boxes Mueller’s, FREE with coupon plus a $1.24 overage
(1) squash from reduced produce, 78¢
(2) packages Johnsonville sausage, $3.99, each with $2 off peelie, and I had (2) $1 off coupons, total 99¢ each
My total so far was $1.52. I needed to spend over $2 because I had a $2 catalina coupon I wanted to use. So, I grabbed…
(1) bag of onions, $1.49
I hated to buy the onions because they were not reduced and I did not have a coupon for them. But, my mother has been asking for onions and the bag brought my total to $3.01. I liked that number. After my $2 catalina, I would pay $1.01. I could hand over a dollar bill and also use my penny. It was not a penny transaction, but it was a good enough sign for me.
As I watched the screen while the cashier rang up my items, I noticed the sausage rang up at $3.99 but then it took 50¢ off. The same thing happened to the other package. Another 50¢ off. Two discounts I was not expecting. I was bummed that my total would be messed up. I was so flustered that I could not do the math. I could not see that I had just gotten an extra dollar off.
After my coupons, my new total was $2.01, not $3.01. I handed over my $2.00 catalina then heard the cashier say these awesome words…
Your total is one penny.

Here is a coupon I will be printing because I sometimes find Athenos Hummus in the reduced deli sections at Shaw’s! If your Shaw’s has reduced sections, you might want to print it too. I will also be watching for sales to match to this coupon.

Thanks to the little Mueller’s overage, my total was 62¢. But for some odd reason it subtracted 12¢ tax, so I paid only 50¢!

Full disclosure.I walked around the Sanford Shaw’s tonight (Friday night) and they had about 40 cans of Pillsbury Cinnabon Orange Sweet Rolls in reduced dairy marked down to $1.40 each.
Here are coupons to go with this deal:

Someone asked about the price of Chex Mix. It’s $2.69 per bag, so 2 for $2.69 during the B1G1 free sale. See coupons and catalina deal here.
Someone else asked about the price of Ken’s Dressing. It is $3.79 each, so 2 for $3.79 during the B1G1 sale. That’s high. Even with coupons, it would be hard to get it low.
The Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice is $2.00 each, so $1.43 each with these coupons.
I forgot to check the price of Kikkoman soy sauce or teriyaki sauce :O(

There is a new coupon for 50¢ off a Starkist Tuna Pouch. The pouches are on sale at Shaw’s right now for $1.50 each, so you pay only 50¢ after the coupon doubles!
But, this tuna often goes on sale for $1 each, so if you hold the coupon, you might be able to score it for FREE later!
You know what I’m going to do, don’t you? I’m holding out for FREE tuna! But, you do what you want :O)

There is another Taster’s Choice coupon out there! This one is for 75¢ off any size or variety of Taster’s Choice! That means we can use it on the 6-pack of singles at Shaw’s. After the coupon doubles, we will get it for FREE!
You get 2 prints per computer, but you will need to sign in as a different user on the other computers.

Even if you don’t have a reduced section, this would will double to $1.30 off, so if you normally buy YoCrunch, here’s a way to save some money on yogurt!
Remember, you can use coupons when you shop the reduced sections at Shaw’s and the coupons will still double! And if there is a peelie coupon on an item (meat, deli), you can stack with a manny Q!

This coupon comes around every so often, and I print it every time! If you wait for a sale at Shaw’s this coupon will double to 60¢ off. Or you can use it at Walmart or Family Dollar where Haribo Gummies are usually priced around a buck.

Shaw’s will have Mueller’s pasta on sale for just 79¢ per box starting Friday the 13th! You can print a coupon on Mueller’s website that will make the pasta either FREE or CHEAP!
Why not just free? The coupon states Do Not Double but it starts with a 5 so it will most likely double automatically. If your cashier does not undouble it manually, you will get the pasta for FREE (and maybe even an overage?). If the cashier forces it to take off just 55¢, then you will pay 24¢, and in that case, it will be cheap!
$.55/1 Mueller’s Pasta – You will need to sign up to get the coupon sent to you via email. If you signed up before, you will need to register with a different email address to get the coupon!
