Shaw’s is having a $5 Instant Savings General Mills sale this week (through 1/5). If you buy 10 participating items, you will get $5 deducted from your total immediately! You can also use coupons on the items you buy to get even better savings! See my shopping scenarios below. Normally during these GM sales, if you buy 20 items you will get $5 off twice, 30 items you will get $5 off three times, etc. If you are new to couponing, I suggest you try just 10 items at a time so you can be sure you get your $5 off. If you don’t, it will be easy to see where the deal went wrong. Small transactions = fewer headaches! Below is a list of the items that are participating in the GM sale. Please be aware that not all flavors, size, etc., are participating. Ask your manager for the GM sale handout. It lists all participating items by UPC. Newbies, if you can’t print, this is a good lesson in printing when bloggers post the coupons because they don’t stick around for long. You’ll also see it’s a good idea to buy several copies of the Sunday paper so you can get the inserts (and remember, values are not the same in all regions, which stinks). It’s all a learning process. You’ll be better prepared for the next sale! :O) My scenarios assume you can only print on ONE COMPUTER and that you have 2 COPIES of inserts. If you have more (or less) coupons, adjust accordingly! Shopping Scenario 1 – All Old El Passo Buy a total of 10 Taco Shells and/or Refried Beans, mix and match, $1.25 each Shopping Scenario 2 – All Grands! Buy 10 Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits, $2 each Shopping Scenario 3 – Stock Up on Cake Mix NOTE: To use the coupons mentioned, you also have to buy frosting. The frosting is not part of the GM deal this time. It might be better to just buy the cake mix and not use coupons. Hurry and print this coupon before it reaches its print limit. You get two prints per computer. People are having trouble printing these, so here are some different links you can try. If you still can’t print, the coupon might no longer be available. $0.50/1 Old El Paso printable or try $0.50/1 Old El Paso printable or try $.50/1 Old El Paso printable – hopefully at least one of these will work for you! Old El Paso taco shells are on sale at Shaw’s this week for $1.25 per box. After the coupon doubles, you will pay just 25¢ per box. And it gets even better… the Old El Paso taco shells are part of the $5 Instant Savings when you buy 10 participating items! Here’s how it would look if you were to get your hands on 4 coupons and if you bought 10 boxes of taco shells for your stockpile: Buy (10) boxes Old El Paso taco shells, $1.25 each, total $12.50 That brings the price up to 35¢ per box, but you get a bunch all at once, then you’re set for taco shells for awhile. If you have even more coupons, you can use them, but only the first 4 will double. If you are brand new to couponing, this is an easy transaction to practice on! You can mix and match items. You do not have to buy only taco shells. I’m just using them as an easy example. The Old El Paso refried beans are also $1.25 and you can use the coupons on those too, so you can mix and match a total of 10 taco shells and cans of beans and still pay only $3.50 for all 10!  Reduced Refrigerated Produce at Shaw's in Sanford, ME
I have been shopping in the Sanford Shaw’s reduced sections for several months now. I often post about my finds and even take photos to share with my readers so they can run to Shaw’s if they see anything they like. I love, love, LOVE that Shaw’s offers reduced food AND that they let us use manufacturer coupons on the reduced items (and the coupons still double!!!). By shopping for reduced food, I have saved mega bucks! I get free eggs, free milk, free cheese, free hummus, free lettuce… let’s just say I get lots of free and super cheap stuff by shopping reduced. But, shopping the reduced sections is not always a perfect experience. I know this first hand. My Very Rotten Potato Last October, I picked up a 10 pound bag of potatoes in reduced produce for $2 (you can see that shopping trip here). The potatoes were in the original paper bag, so I could not check the quality. When I opened the bag, one potato was sooooo rotten… that… that… that… it had maggots all over it. Yes, it did. Lots of them. For some odd reason, the potato did not stink. But man, was it rotten. I took the entire bag to Shaw’s and showed customer service the little critters. The store manager was not there, but when I spoke to him the next day, I explained what happened and I suggested that next time they have potatoes in the paper bags that they open the bags and sell the potatoes in clear plastic so we can see what we are getting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen potatoes in a paper bag since. And if you think I’m nuts for still shopping reduced after the maggot episode, I totally understand that stuff like that happens. I don’t hold it against Shaw’s. There were absolutely wonderful in the way they handled my buggy ordeal. My Reader’s Rotten Coconut A reader on my Deals by Darlene facebook page shared her recent reduced coconut purchase. I had posted that Shaw’s had reduced coconuts for only 25¢. My coconut was perfect (you can see it here). My reader’s coconut was not. Hers was rotten and moldy. I suggested to my reader that she let Shaw’s know about the coconut because it will help everyone in the long run. The more Shaw’s knows about the quality (or lack of quality) of their reduced items, the more the reduced sections will improve! I have seen a big improvement in the quality of reduced items over the past few months. That’s probably because they actually listen to my suggestions! Ways YOU can Help Shaw’s Improve Their Reduced Sections 1. Make suggestions! I will suggest to Shaw’s (without mentioning any names) that next time they sell reduced coconuts, maybe they can crack the coconuts open, put them on the little green tray, wrap them in plastic wrap then toss them in the refrigerated section of reduced produce instead of on the non refrigerated carts. Then we can see what we are getting and they won’t be putting out bad fruit! 2. Point out the bad stuff! Whenever I see something in reduced that has gone too far, I point it out to whoever is in charge. I do it nicely. They want to know. They really do. Sometimes they say people buy the overly ripe stuff to feed to their animals. When they say that (and they say it often), I always 3. Discuss price with the managers! For weeks, I was buying potatoes for 29¢ per pound or less in reduced. Then the price suddenly jumped to 59¢ per pound or more and it stayed there for two weeks! On three different occasions I spoke to three different managers and whole-heartedly express my sadness about the price increase. I was spoiled rotten (no pun intended) and wanted my cheap potatoes to be dirt cheap (pun intended). I guess the 3rd time was the charm, because next time I shopped the potatoes were back down to 29¢ with only minor increases in price now and then. 4. Tell them what you want to see in reduced sections! I have heard through various followers that the Shaw’s in Sanford has just about the best reduced sections around! If you want your store to offer more reduced items, tell them! Tell them Deals by Darlene wants YOU to get great deals too! And when I post photos of the goodies I find in reduced, print them and show your store manager! Seriously. Fresh Express is often found in reduced produce at Shaw’s marked down to $1 per bag (sometimes $1.25 or $1.50). If you find it for a buck, you will get it for FREE! $.55/1 Fresh Express Salad – print, then dance like you’re drunk! There are a few things you need to know: 1. This is a pdf coupon so you can print to your heart’s content. There’s NO print limit!!! (hence, the drunk dance) 2. The coupon prints in two parts and is meant to be folded. However, you really only need the bottom half. 3. The coupon states Do Not Double but the UPC starts with a 5, so it should double nicely (anything that starts with a 9 will not double). If your cashier wants to manually force it to not double, then that’s up to them. Pick your cashier wisely!

I sure hope I can freeze hummus. I’m about to find out, because I scored BIG TIME tonight on Tribe hummus and I’ll need to freeze most of it. I figure the texture might change if frozen, but that’s no biggie to me. I’ll freeze (and eat) just about anything. Okay, here’s how I paid only 15¢ for all this by shopping at my lovely Shaw’s in Sanford. Then I got such a sweet surprise after I paid! Bought (7) Tribe Hummus in reduced deli, $3.49 each, total $24.43 Bought (8) Muir Glen tomato paste, $1.19 each, total $9.52 I spent $3.43 on the hummus but I made $3.28 on the Muir Glen so I paid only 15¢ for everything! That’s 15¢ for $33.95 worth of hummus and tomato paste! Then SURPRISE!!! Along with my receipt, I got not one but TWO $2.00 catalina coupons for buying the hummus! Now I have $4.00 to spend on anything next time I shop at Shaw’s! I ended up $3.85 richer than when I entered the store. I had no clue there was a Tribe catalina… I just got super lucky! And I just did a quick search online and it seems I’ll be able to freeze that hummus and it should thaw perfectly with no change in texture! NOTE: Even though Shaw’s states they do not allow for overage (it looks like that policy might be changing in our favor… more on that later), if the coupon scans and automatically doubles for the full amount, then they usually don’t catch the overage. You won’t get cash back, so make sure you have enough other stuff to cover the overage. I used Muir Glen coupons before, so I knew they would double for the full amount. I ran over to my Sanford Shaw’s Wednesday night after my TOPS meeting and of all things… I found coconuts in reduced produce. And they were only 25¢ each. No coupons necessary! I only bought one because I was not sure if they were dried out. The one I bought was DELICIOUS! And these are easy to open because they are pre-scored (no coconut milk). Just tap against something hard and they crack open. Nice and juicy. Very fresh. I think this has to be one of my favorite treasures that I find in reduced produce. I mean really, a coconut for a quarter. I love it! They had maybe 5 more, so if you are heading to Shaw’s in Sanford Thursday morning, pick one up! There is a new coupon for Wet One Wipes and you have several choices on how you can use it. Scenario One: Use the coupon at Walmart and look for the travel size pack (not sure if they’ll take it for travel size because it states canister or singles, but it does not exclude travel size so it’s worth a shot). The travel size should be priced around a dollar, so you would get it super cheap with the coupon! Scenario Two: Use the coupon at a store that doubles and accepts SavingStar eCoupons, like Shaw’s (see below). You will get a total of $1.50 off then 75¢ back so you save $2.25 total. Wait for the Wet Ones to go on sale and pick up a cheap canister or pack of singles!

Waaaaa….. Waaaaa…. Shaw’s in Sanford had a bunch of bags of Pillsbury Sweet Moments desserts in reduced dairy marked down to only $1 each and I didn’t have any coupons!!! I even ran home to see if I could find some coupons online or in my inserts, but nope! The only ones I had were expired (and they would have made them free). Since I’m so strict with my couponing, and since I could not get the Sweet Moments for free, I didn’t buy any. However, you don’t have to be that strict! If you are headed over to the Sanford Shaw’s on Wednesday, run over to reduced dairy (over near the butter) and grab yourself some CHEAP Sweet Moments! A dollar really is an awesome price. And what a great treat to serve over the New Year holiday! Oh, and bring your Oscar Mayer Lunchables coupons with you, because they had at least 10 Lunchables to choose from in reduced deli. They were $3.19, I think, with $1.00 OFF stickies on them. Then with the 50¢ off coupon (it will double) you will pay $1.19. Again, I really wanted them for free, so I left them all there. But, if you normally buy Lunchables, that’s a great deal! Oh, oh, oh… and they had lots of pints of Hood Half & Half in reduced dairy, like maybe 25 pints. I think they were 65¢ each. And plenty of cheap yogurt… and they still had Tropicana for $1, free with coupons. I left the store with nothing because I had no coupons to match anything. I only wanted free. Boo hoo to me. I’m quite excited about this coupon!!! That’s because I have been seeing lots of Lunchables in the reduced deli section at my Sanford Shaw’s. They’ve actually had some just about every day for over a week. But, I had no coupons to stack with the stickie coupons that they slapped on the boxes. Now, I do! And this coupon will double to $1 off! Chances are good that I’ll be able to get reduced Lunchables anywhere from FREE to a Buck after the coupon!
